Bush + Harper = ? for Canada

Aaarrgggh! I’ve watched a lot of news today and can’t help but feel sick at the thought of the doubly nauseating press conference given today by US president George Bush along with our own Prime Minister (I hate saying this name after I say Prime Minister) Stephen Harper. Watching them slime all over each other literally made me want to vomit; especially when Bush called Harper “Steve”. Read the whole wretched ordeal here!

Folks, we’re one day closer to losing our Canadian identity and becoming the next State! Woo hoo! Now don’t get me wrong; I love the US. I lived in Texas for a few years, and I still miss it. However, we are a different country. I am proud of the values we Canadians have as a whole. I am proud of our long-standing liberal traditions, our diversity and our open-mindedness as a nation. The US is one country and we are another. I want to keep it that way. Having Stephen Harper in office makes me afraid that we are not going to be able to.

Watched a fantastically interesting doc on the CBC today about the quest for oil in the Alaskan Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. I can’t for the life of me remember the name of it, but it was all about the struggle between the big oil companies and the environmentalists who are trying to save the Alaskan wilderness. It’s so beautiful up there. Maybe I shouldn’t be, but I have to say that I was surprised by the numbers of folk in the isolated native communities who live there that supported drilling the Wildlife Refuge. I can see their point though; the one community leader was saying that before they received dividends from oil revenues, they had no heat, no light, no running water, cars, anything modern at all, and now they have a modern school, new fire trucks and all the things that make life easier. However, the footage of a beach full of dead and dying seals and bears and other beautiful animals from the massive Exxon oil spill of 1989 made my feel like crying. Those are images that will stick with me for a long time.

I didn’t have the heart to post the images, they’re so gut-wrenchingly sad.

Found an absolutely brilliant blog today while I was surfing around avoiding doing any work. It’s called Architectures of Control and it addresses products that control and restrict our behaviour. I strongly urge everyone interested in the slightest to check it out. It’s unbelievably informative and really made me think about the way we are sometimes helped, often hindered and almost always controlled by these products we base our lives around. Dan Lockton is an innovative writer, engineer and designer specializing in transportation and consumer products. Seriously, this in an incredibly interesting site.
